Friday Night Film

A documentary about a real-life genius who defined the genius tripping into madness divide. Bobby Fischer went from upholding the capitalist position at the height of the Cold War to calling radio stations extolling the virtues of 9/11. Fascinating, compelling and clinical, we are reminded that we all have a little bit of genius and a little bit of madness inside...

Sunday Morning Song

Folk-flavoured artistry from this bluegrass musical circus. During live sets they ask the audience to phone their mobiles to produce a wall of static. It works, it's all inside and makes you feel. The Low Anthem.

Friday Night Film

This is a film that confronts the stigma of AIDS and the prejudice involved with insight and restraint. Well told with a magnificent central performance. "Life, Above All", is a strong film worth watching for many reasons. It was on 5th June 1981 that doctors noticed an unusual outbreak of pneumonia in Los Angeles. Since then 25m people have died from the disease, on this 30th anniversary a further 34m are infected...

Friday Night Film

Who could not love a film made in Barafundle bay in South Wales? Four mates go on soul searching last chance catch up before one of them dies of cancer. Must make more of your lives prickliness pervades, but the script is sharp and the photography is wonderful. We should all be in pub brawls more often, go beach combing and just be honest with each other... Third Star by Hattie Dalton.

The Chippensteel chair by Polish designer Oskar Zieta . The chair consists of two, 0.5mm metal sheets, welded them together and then inflated by high pressure air. Despite the small amount of material, the design is strong and it's look is dynamic and spacey. Just a shame about the name...

Friday Night Film

There are some things the French do very well. This is one of them; a subtle sensual coming of age film. The script is pert and witty and the acting soft and gentle, the landscapes robust and devout. Rocking Horses

A rocking horse for our niece... There are some stunning examples of craftmanship available which are also stunningly expensive. The Unicorn from Tetbury Rocking Horse has a hand carved Glastonbury crystal as its horn! Black Beauty from Suffolk Rocking Horses has 14 layers of paint to protect the body from the brass stirrups! However, our favorite is the Chestnut rocker by Richard Fairbrother as it has a bit of the Elk about it!

Mumbai Sunday

"India is a geographical term, it is no more a country than the equator." India is all about the people. To visit India means to visit the people. They are what makes this enormous place so intriguing and beguiling. It is a land of contrast and mystery. A shack next to a glass fronted executive block, a table of goats heads in front of a designer boutique, a penniless child swept passed by a darkened Mercedes. There is no way to make sense of the place, it is there to be experienced and you will always be welcomed, despite the form filling and bureaucracy you may have to endure.

Sunday Morning Song

Angus & Julia Stone. A voice that will haunt your dreams....

Saturday, 7 May 2011

We love this story. The faculty of Art Media and Design at Staffordshire university set up a company, Flux, to produce a range of ceramics. The products are produced locally in an industry that has been in decline for 50years. The style evokes the traditional British designs but is definitely new and modern. The company is run by the students under the guidance of their professor. The university and students benefit greatly in many ways. The project provides real world experience and gives the students a platform to market themselves, they also make some money as does the university faculty. In fact they aim to turn over £100,000 in their first year alone! Take an A+.
